From vague idea to commercial product: hardware, firmware, software and mechanical design under one roof.
System engineering
Ranging from technology feasibility studies, to detailed review of existing projects, to support for patent applications, we have experience taking projects from vague ideas to successful commercial implementation.
Compliance and EMC
Compliance is often where product schedules slip. We help at both ends: designing for compliance from the start, and fixing products that are already failing.
For existing products, we diagnose and mitigate EMC problems, from radiated emissions to immunity failures, and get them back through testing with the least disruption to the design.
For new products, we take designs through the standards they need: radiated emissions and immunity, electrical safety, PTCRB certification for cellular devices, and IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-1-2 for medical devices, including FDA submissions. We prepare products and documentation for accredited test labs, and work through any failures with you.
With pre-compliance and troubleshooting equipment in-house, we find and fix problems before you pay for chamber time, and iterate quickly when a product fails.

Electronics design
From a sketch on a piece of paper through to compliance testing and mass production, ILR has delivered hundreds of electronic designs, with production runs ranging from three units total to hundreds of thousands of devices.
Extremely low power, battery and solar powered, industrial temperature range, intrinsically safe, automotive, aviation and medical: we’ve done it (almost) all.
ILR has prototyping and short-run manufacturing facilities in-house, and works with a variety of contract manufacturers in New Zealand, Australia and Asia to deliver the best solution for our customers.
We also design and build cost-effective end-of-line programming and functional test fixtures, with logging and reporting, so every unit is programmed and verified before it ships.
Software design
From the smallest 8-bit microcontroller, to 32- and 64-bit DSPs and systems on chip, to mobile apps and cloud computing, ILR covers all aspects of software design. Our projects span machine learning and AI, audio and video signal processing, payments and analytics, and deliver real results.
Our experience with embedded Linux on multiple platforms has delivered reliable, scalable solutions, with full product lifecycle support.
We develop and maintain cross-platform mobile applications for iOS and Android, using Flutter and native code, to support our customers’ systems, with an emphasis on low cost of ownership over the life of the product.
Our cloud applications, deployed on AWS and Google Cloud Platform, are engineered for efficiency: monthly costs stay low and remain reasonable as the number of connected devices grows.
Built for reliability, repeatability, longevity and scalability, our software continues to be used in mission-critical applications across agriculture, aviation, security and public safety, and has supported billions of dollars of electronic transactions.
FPGA design
ILR is an Altera Solution Acceleration Partner (ASAP).
For over 20 years we’ve delivered FPGA-based solutions on both Altera and Xilinx (now AMD) devices, including audio and video processing implementations. We can advise on whether an FPGA is the right fit for your system, and take the design through to implementation.

Wired and wireless communications
We have experience in real-world implementations of a wide range of communications standards, and have pushed the limits of bandwidth, range and performance across many projects. We know what works, what doesn’t, and how to evaluate performance in the field, not just on the bench.
If it’s a communications standard, we’ve likely worked with it.

Enclosure design
In-house design of enclosures for the electronics we create, with prototyping in-house. Tight integration of electronic and mechanical CAD results in products that fit.
